Hifi Salutes: Richard Flohil, music publicist and concert promoter

Richard Flohil is one of Canada’s most well-known music publicists. Born and raised in England, Flohil attended boarding school where he would listen to the BBC jazz club every Wednesday afternoon—”it was game over at that point,” he recalls. He then relocated to Canada where he could pursue his love of blues and jazz since Britain didn’t seem to have many musicians of those genres during that particular time. Although Flohil’s experience living in Toronto was initially lackluster, lousy even, coming across a performance by Earl Hines at a bar on Yonge street changed his perception of the city—and his career potential.
