Everyone’s got their favourite St. Patrick’s Day tradition, whether it’s spending the day at the pub with friends or adding green food colouring to nearly everything you eat. With St. Paddy’s Day right around the corner, we’re here to guide you through some of our favourite St. Paddy’s Day traditions that you can indulge in this time of year.

1. Guinness Beer

If you’re looking for an Irish brew, you can’t get more authentic than Guinness. The chocolate-tasting dry stout originated in Dublin in 1759, and still bears the original brewer’s name: Arthur Guinness. Health studies claim that Guinness is good for the heart, and contains antioxidants like many fruits and vegetables, so drink up!

2. Corned Beef and Hash

This hearty dish was often served to Irish immigrant workers after a long day toiling in construction in the early 20th century. While some dispute the true Irishness of corned beef and cabbage, it’s become inextricably linked with St. Patrick’s Day in the past few decades.

3. Parades

Nearly every city holds its own St. Paddy’s day celebration, but the biggest in North America are in New York, where the parade lasts for nearly six hours, and Boston, the city with the largest number of residents to claim Irish ancestry.

4. Wearing Green

The easiest way to show your St. Patrick’s Day pride is to throw on a little green – emerald, forest or Kelly, any green will do! This is the one day a year it’s socially acceptable to wear a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirt.

5. Colossal Hangovers

Oops, you overdid it in the celebration department—and now you’re paying for it big time. Maybe next year you’ll put the brakes on when it comes to all that Guinness, but until then, drink plenty of water and eat fruit until your skull no longer feels like someone is dancing an Irish jig inside of it.
