As the U.S. made its preparations to back the countries of Western Europe in the midst of WWII, the country’s army realized it needed a new military vehicle. And fast. Giving only 49 days for this new miracle car to be constructed and delivered to Camp Holabird, Maryland, only one car maker was up to the task: the American Bantam Car Company from Butler, Pennsylvania. With very little time to spare, the car makers reinvented their poorly selling two-seater speedster in the hopes that the bigger, newer version would do the trick. It did. Or did it?
