Laurie Myles has spent the last few years focusing on two passion projects. She builds unique furniture made out of old barn beams, and she leads volunteer trips to Guatemala. While the two activities may seem very different, they both represent a sense of freedom to Laurie:
“Freedom is about having the time to pursue your passions. It’s having the freedom to take the time to find out what your passions are.”
To create her furniture, Laurie travels to the Bruce Peninsula and reclaims old barn beams. She then turns these beams into tables, which she sells online.
Her charity, GiveGetGo, works to send teams of people on volunteer excursions in underserved communities. Most recently, Laurie has been organizing trips to the Melody School, a non-for-profit organization, which provides free education to children between two and six in Chimaltenango, Guatemala.
In the next few years, Laurie hopes to be able to devote all her time to these two endeavours. For now, she’s happy she has the freedom to pursue both her passions.
