If you’ve never experienced the famous maritime town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, it’s time you planned a visit. We already christened it one of Canada’s 10 best small towns for a day trip, but there’s plenty to see and do on an extended stay. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a beautiful community full of historic treasures, brightly painted homes, and stunning architecture. Its relaxed seaside vibe will strike the perfect note with travellers who need a little rest and relaxation.
Where to rent a cabin
Located on a hill overlooking the bay, The Lunenburg Oceanview Chalets have won rave reviews from past visitors. There are six log chalets available to rent, three one bedrooms, and three two bedrooms. Each one is charmingly old fashioned in appearance, yet fully equipped with modern conveniences including a full kitchen, big screen TV, high speed internet, and air jet tub. Seafood fans will really dig the barbecue that comes with special equipment so you can cook your own lobster. Where to get the best view
Lunenburg has always had a symbiotic relationship with the sea and the port is the best place to experience that connection. Nothing beats the beauty of an ocean vista combined with the majesty of a harbor full of ships. You can stroll along the waterfront and admire all the different types of boats, and even board the Bluenose II, a replica of Canada’s most famous tall ship, the Bluenose.
Where to go on a hike
We generally recommend nature walks for maximum relaxation, but in this case a walking tour through the town itself is the perfect hiking excursion. Lunenburg is one of only two urban sites in North America that have been recognized by UNESCO and it is wonderfully ripe for exploration. Lunenburg Walking Tours is the number one rated company in the area, staffed with many guides whose families have been ingrained in the community for generations. They’ll take you on an expedition through cemeteries, churches, museums, and historic houses. There’s even a haunted tour option for folks who crave a little creepiness with their culture.
Where to take a dip
Lunenburg County, the larger area in which the town of Lunenburg is located, has tons of wonderful beaches worth visiting, many of them less than a half hour’s drive away. Hirtle’s Beach is located on two small lakes and is a nice alternative for people wary of cold Atlantic waters. It’s generally free of crowds, which makes swimming a lot less stressful. Cunard’s Beach, located in Oven’s Natural Park, is a former hot spot for gold discovery and beach-goers still find it fun to hunt for treasure. Carry a gold pan while you swim and you never know what you’ll find!
Where to grab a pint
Local hangout The Knot Pub provides the perfect atmosphere for anyone looking to unwind over a pint of beer. The menu offers a tantalizing variety of fresh seafood, the crowd is an interesting mix of international characters who have stopped in at the port, and the owners are friendly and welcoming. The interior of the pub is carved from oak, which was the traditional boat-building wood for hundreds of years. The seats are large and horseshoe-shaped, just like the kind you’d find on the bow of a ship. If you glance up from your brew, you’ll notice that the ceiling is covered with copper pennies, which were personal arranged by the owner. Oh, and be sure to watch out for the mysterious lady ghost who glides around the joint from time to time.
