One night when a 13-year-old Grant Smith was falling asleep in his bed at home he heard faint music playing somewhere in the distance. Confused about where it was coming from, the boy got out of bed and stuck his head outside of his window. Nothing. Once back inside he realized that there was a record player beneath his window and that’s where the sound was emanating from. It was a song. A rhythm and blues song—and he liked it.
