Meet the Nicobar pigeon, the Dodo’s closest living relative

Unlike the extinct Dodo Bird with its more neutral, muted feathers, the Nicobar pigeon in all its iridescent glory is the Dodo’s closest living relative. The brightly coloured pigeon lives on small islands and in coastal regions from the Nicobar islands through the Malay Archipelago, to the Solomons, and Palau. It measures 16 inches in length and females are slightly smaller than males. These photographers beautifully capture the luminous bird—which are now considered “near-threatened.”
