Queen Elizabeth II becomes longest reigning British monarch

At about 5:30 PM British Standard Time, Queen Elizabeth II will surpasses her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as longest living ruler of the United Kingdom. The Queen has reigned for over 63 years and is eight years older than Victoria was when she passed away in 1901.

“Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones – my own is no exception – but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness,” she said at a ceremony commemorating the event.
