Summer is officially over, but that doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to being an indoor kid for the next six months. While the weather may be getting cooler, there are still plenty of fun activities you can do outside in the next few months.

Rock climbing

Climbing

Fall is the ideal season for climbing. Foliage is reduced so you have better views, and there aren’t any bugs swarming around as you try to get your footing. Plus, the panoramic views of changing leaves will make your summit that much more satisfying.

Pumpkin picking

Whether you’re carving them up for Halloween, or just trying to liven up a Thanksgiving centrepiece, pumpkins are a festive addition to any household during October. Pumpkin patches are fun to wander through, and are usually corn maze adjacent, making picking a great family outing.

Go camping

Camping

Cool, dry weather means fewer people, fewer bugs, and more fun curling up by the fire. You’ll see a whole new side of the Canadian wilderness as you hike through golden trails, and crush through fallen leaves. Just make sure you bring a sleeping bag suitable for cool weather and some nice warm socks.

Paragliding

Take in intense views from the sky by trying your hand at paragliding. You can ride tandem with an instructor (or if you’re really brave, try a solo flight) and survey the changing autumn landscape.

Mountain biking

You can mountain bike anytime of year, but it’s especially great in fall. Lower temperatures mean you’ll have more stamina as you rip up the trails, and you’ll have extra beautiful go-pro footage as you bike down trails lined by red and gold hued leaves.

Photo excursions

Taking photos fall

Get out your DSLR and go on a fall foliage tour, a hike, or just a walk with your family. You can capture the beautiful changing leaves , kids jumping in piles of leaves, or just the changing atmosphere in your city.

Fishing

There’s still great fishing for bass, muskie, and walleye throughout the fall. You may have to go a bit deeper, but you can still bring back quite a haul of tasty fish. Just make sure you double check when the season ends.

Zip-lining

Zip-lining

Similar to camping, this activity is better in fall because it’s less busy and there are no pests. You can take zip-line tours in natural parks, mountains, and forests across the country. It’s a fun and exciting way to take in the country’s natural wonders, as long as you’re not scared of heights!

Apple picking

Head to a local orchard and take advantage of some newly ripened apples. There’s something so satisfying about harvesting your own food, and it’s the perfect fall excursion to bring kids along on. You can pick a bushel and then make cider, preserves, pies, or just eat them with your family.

There’s nothing like having the top down and exploring country roads with the wind in your hair. You can escape the city, stop at local fruit stands to pick up the season’s bounty—apple cider anyone?—and take in the changing leaves.
